Candlelight Dinners

The whole month of December, our family eats by candlelight. We take turns lighting and (carefully) blowing out the candles. I grew up with that tradition, back in the old days when we used matches to light candles.

My kids love this tradition. We used to use tapers, but it became to tricky for lighting purposes, then we went the votive route - too messy, now we just use tea lights. Ahhh perfect.

Luckily, we have a dimmer on our dining room light so we can still see what we're eating, but the kids get the feel of eating by candlelight. As soon as Thanksgiving is over, they are begging us to bring out the candle tree.

How fun! This reminded me of a friend of mine who does a pioneer night once a month with her family. They turn off all electricity, cook dutch oven and eat by candle light. Then they play games and her four oldest of six kids all sleep together on the floor in the living room.

Your idea sounds much easier!!!

What a nice idea! We try to use the Advent wreath for dinner light as much as possible during Advent, and my kids really enjoy that. :)

Oooh...I think maybe our dinners would be quieter by candlelight. We will have to try that.

Love this idea! My kids love to eat by candle light (mostly because they're a bunch of little pyros).

I also love the pioneer night idea.

Glad I checked out your blog!

This sounds like such a lovely tradition. Momrn2 at My Quiet Corner is hosting a carnival tomorrow where everyone shares their Christmas traditions. This would be a nice addition!!! You can find her blog here: http://momrn2.blogspot.com/

Ashamed to admit it, but my kids keep sneaking away to the darkened basement and eating to the light of the TV lately. I'm totally opposed, and need to put a stop to it right quick! But I remember one December a couple of years back we read a Christmas story every night to candlelight after dinner. The kids did love it. This year, my husband and I got into the Christmas spirit and just kept wrapping garland with lights and ornaments and hanging them all over the living room and kitchen. It's beautiful at night with the lights out. Perfect ambiance for a nice family dinner I'm thinking.

I loved this tradition growing up, and I think I need to start it in ours. Although the boys really have a hard time with not blowing out the candles or playing with the fire. Go figure.
